After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the original academy’s eleven structures had been compromised, forcing to shut down the institution and rebuild. The current design by Renzo Piano, which consists of one building that was able to preserve three of the original structures: the African Hall, the North American Hall and the Steinhart Aquarium reopened to the public in 2008; it combines research, education, conservation and exhibition all under the same roof.
