Case Study |  M. H. de Young Museum

The fine arts museum, M. H. de Young, in San Francisco that was named after one of the city’s newspapermen, reopened to the public in 2005. The original structure which was built in 1895 was completely destroyed by the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, and the artwork it housed was temporarily relocated until the current museum was finished. Designed by the architects, Herzog & de Meuron, the architects made it so the new institution could withstand future earthquakes by giving it the flexibility to move up to three feet.
