Transforming Tradition: Shedd Aquarium Demolition is Underway
Shedd Aquarium’s Experience Evolution is well underway, and the demolition of existing spaces has officially begun. As the lead architects spearheading this transformative journey, Valerio Dewalt Train finds ourselves at the intersection of history and innovation, navigating the intricate process of revitalizing Chicago’s iconic Shedd Aquarium and ensuring its success into the next century.
This monumental undertaking involves not only the demolition of some current conditions but also the seamless coordination of the complex building and life support systems within the aquarium. Our mission extends beyond the reconstruction and expansion of animal exhibits to the restoration and preservation of the aquarium's rich historic architecture. Join us as we dive deep into the challenges and triumphs of breathing new life into this 100-year-old building.
Improved Arrival Experience
The new entry and arrival plaza provides a unified, accessible entrance experience for all. New interactive landscape design will accompany this updated structure, ensuring a seamless fusion of modernity and history. The enhanced entry and connection to historic Kovler Hall will open up the space and maximize ceiling heights, increasing circulation and creating a welcoming environment for visitors.
The institution’s commitment to sustainability in construction is evident, as a majority of scrap material is currently being sorted for salvage, reuse, and recycling. The protection and restoration of the marble exterior and iconic "Man with Fish" statue embody the commitment to preserving Shedd's heritage.
Enhanced Animal Care and Habitat Expansion
The arapaima exhibit is undergoing an expansion to cater to the evolving needs of these magnificent fish as they mature. This process entails expanding the exhibit footprint to double in size, the reconstruction of robust concrete structures, and the installation of continuous new acrylic windows. These updates enrich the arapaima’s aquatic environment in addition to offering visitors an enhanced eye-to-eye experience with these remarkable creatures.
The intricate task of circulating saltwater throughout the aquarium mandates the use of corrosion-resistant materials for all piping to and from exhibits. Temporary piping has been strategically installed during the construction phase to maintain uninterrupted operation of exhibit and building systems, ensuring the safety and well-being of aquatic life within Shedd’s walls.
Historic Preservation and Optimized Circulation
Shedd is dedicated to the stewardship of the original architecture, honoring and preserving the building’s heritage. Our design team is navigating the intricate balance of sustaining ongoing construction endeavors while ensuring continued visitor access.
In historic areas affected by construction, flooring, and other elements were either protected in place or carefully removed and methodically cataloged for reuse. This preservation effort is a commitment to blending the old and the new and transcending boundaries of time while preserving the essence that defines this iconic structure.
